This year, The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command received $1 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to setup Permanent Supportive Housing for homeless young adults in the state. These funds were awarded to The Salvation Army as part of a new approach to housing homeless young adults between the ages of 18 to 25 years old. Through this initiative The Salvation Army will provide housing and offer educational, job training and therapeutic support to homeless young adults with an overall focus on Trauma Recovery using elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Our International Corps Community Center in Southwest Houston is one of the fastest growing Salvation Army community centers in the country. Despite not having a permanent facility Captains Stephen and Sujung Na have managed to continuously introduce new programs and services to their community. This month thanks to the support of our friends in the Greater Houston region we will finally break ground on the construction of a new permanent facility for the International Corps.

Just a couple of months ago Bilal Jaffri was on the other side. He was homeless, he was addicted, and he was suffering. Mostly from trauma and abuse he had faced as a young boy. But that was before he received housing and other support from The Salvation Army. Today, he has a home. And he is employed at the same Salvation Army social services office that helped him overcome homelessness. Now he is excited to be able to help others overcome the same issues.

Last week, sixth graders from Second Baptist Middle School in Houston visited our shelter for men in near North Houston, the Harbor Light Center. They shared in worship with the men and spent the day motivating them to keep their faith strong as they move forward with their struggles. This is a yearly activity for the students of Second Baptist Middle School.

The Houston Gold Exchange continued to pay the spirit of the Christmas season forward for The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command by announcing it would purchase the nonprofit organization's First Gold Coin of the Season this year for a record-breaking $5,000. Last year, another local company purchased a gold coin from the 2011 Red Kettle season from The Salvation Army for $3,000. This new purchase would increase the price of this year's gold coin contribution by $2,000. |

Three local families received quite the surprise yesterday afternoon, as Shell Oil partnered with The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command to provide them with over $500 in groceries each. It was part of a community outreach effort by the local Shell Oil, and the families selected were existing clients of the Army's social services office. It was truly a wonderful experience for everyone. |
