	After 40 years of service, Houston's Area Commanders retire Last month, two of Houston’s most prominent nonprofit leaders stepped down from their reign as Area Commanders for one of the local region’s longest-standing charitable organizations as they prepared for the next stage of their lives: retirement. Majors Marshall and Carolyn Gesner, who have also been married for 40 years, walked into The Salvation Army's headquarters on the 1500 block of Austin Street as the nonprofit agency's top brass for the last time on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. >>More
	Summer Day Camp in full swing In the rush of morning traffic; in the hustle and bustle of daily commutes; hundreds of children ages 5 to 12 begin arriving at The Salvation Army’s four area corps community centers throughout the Greater Houston region. They are there to participate in the Army’s annual Summer Day Camp program, which provides working parents a safe and affordable option for keeping their kids occupied during the long summer months! >>More
	Annual Report - Online Now In 2008, The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command served well over 5 million people through our Hurricane Ike disaster relief efforts, but that wasn’t the only thing taking place at our 17 area facilities. The number of homeless people sleeping at one of our shelters on any given night has increased to over 800…over 36,000 disadvantaged seniors and children received Christmas gifts from our organization…thanks in large part to the over 100,000 volunteer hours donated by you – our community. 	Making a difference, one life at a time Despite serving the Greater Houston region for over 120 years now, for many people the thought of The Salvation Army simply evokes one thought – bell ringers and kettles outside of area stores asking for money during the Christmas holiday season. While that is an image the nonprofit organization is very proud of, clients of The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command know the agency represents much more than that. 	Legend of the Army: Joe the Turk Imprisoned 57 times “for Jesus,” or for disturbing the peace with his open air preaching as authorities described it, Joseph Garabed was not the usual Salvationist. Originally born Nishan Der Garabedian in Tallas, Turkey to a priest of the American Episcopal Church, he was at first not able to join The Salvation Army church because of his affinity for smoking and drinking. It was his friendship with Houston native Salvationist, John Ephraim Thomas Milsaps, however, that ultimately convinced him to retire his habits in order to join The Salvation Army in 1887. >>More
