One year after Ike: The Salvation Army standing strong
A year ago on September 13th, Hurricane Ike ravaged through the Greater Houston region. Immediately after, The Salvation Army was among the first government, disaster relief and nonprofit organizations to respond. When it was all said and done, the Army had provided assistance to some 5 million southeast Texas residents. 	Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program promises to help many local residents This month, The Salvation Army of Greater Houston has begun implementing a new assistance opportunity in Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, in conjunction with the federal Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP), to assist individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The goal of this new initiative is to rapidly transition at risk or homeless participants into stable housing. >>More

	Restoring Acres Homes' beacon of hope Until last year, The Salvation Army's Garden City Boys & Girls Club had served as a refuge to children from one of Houston's toughest neighborhoods. At Garden City, over 70 children a day would engage in positive activities that kept them off the streets and away from drugs and gangs. Since Hurricane Ike, however, The Salvation Army facility has remained closed because of the destruction to the building. Now, the nonprofit is ready to bring back this community center bigger and better than before. >>More
	November 3rd: Ben Stein in Houston Sure to be the hottest ticket in town this winter, The Salvation Army’s Annual Luncheon featuring celebrity Ben Stein will take place on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston. Tickets are still available for this one-time-only event and Stein’s keynote speech promises to be well worth the charitable contribution. The agency’s Annual Luncheon is its largest fundraiser of the year and funds many local programs and services. >>More
	As winter approaches, The Salvation Army is already gearing up for Christmas Fourteen weeks away from Christmas, The Salvation Army is well into the preparation process for their 2009 Holiday Season Charity Giving Campaign. Angels for the Angel Tree Program have already been ordered, Christmas assistance registration dates have been identified, the Harbor Light Choir is busy booking dates, and a new Secret Santa Warehouse will soon be announced. Over 36,000 residents of Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties receive Christmas assistance from The Salvation Army each year. >>More

	Honoring our troops and spreading smiles Serving human needs without discrimination is the mission of the now 120 year-old Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command, and this month the agency added spreading good cheer to its overall efforts. The nonprofit partnered with two local heavy hitters – Brookfield Properties and the Houston Astros – to make these latest community ventures possible. On September 8th, Area Commander, Major Chris Flanagan kicked-off a month long public flag signing exhibition at Two Allen Center in downtown Houston to honor U.S. Armed Forces service members. >>More
	Hundreds turn out for The Salvation Army's Community Cool Off Several blocks down the street at 7:00 a.m. dozens of vehicles were already lined up at The Salvation Army's Irvington Corps Boys & Girls Clubs Community Center located at 4516 Irvington Blvd. in Houston's near north side. They were there to receive assistance from our city's scorching heat from The Salvation Army, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. >>More
