Acclaimed worldwide for its broad humanitarian service and outreach, The Salvation Army has an impressive history as a religious and charitable organization which dates back to 1865, when it was founded by William Booth to minister to the homeless in Victorian England. Booth's compassion for society's outcasts sparked a spiritual and social revolution. To this day, the organization still upholds the code and doctrine formalized by its founder.
The Salvation Army officially began its United States ministry on March 10, 1880, in Battery Park in New York City, when the first street meeting was held.
Houston welcomed The Salvation Army in 1889 and has nurtured its growth and caring spirit for over 119 years. During that time, an expanding network of dedicated officers, staff and volunteers has embraced the sick and lonely, cared for the poor, and provided compassionate emergency response in times of disaster. Collectively, our new facilities and enhanced programs have enabled the Army to continue our mission with renewed zeal throughout every sector of our community.
The Salvation Army helps people to aspire and to achieve significant milestones in their personal development. Our supporters make that possible. Please be assured that our officers, soldiers and employees will continue to spread the Word of God and the Gift of Jesus Christ's nurturing love.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

However, gifts of this type fully fund only one of our programs - resident substance abuse treatment at Adult Rehabilitation Centers. The vast majority of Salvation Army programs and services must be funded by monetary donations.
