After 120 years of service in
Houston, The Salvation Army is still going strong
The year was
1889. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington had
just been admitted by President Grover Cleveland as the 39th,
40th, 41st, and 42nd U.S. states. The first juke box had just
gone into operation at the Palais Rolaye Saloon in San
Francisco. Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night was still
freshly-painted, and over in France the city of Paris was
celebrating the inauguration of its new Eiffel Tower.
Here in Houston, history was also
being made. A single female officer by the name of Captain
French had taken on the task of introducing a new form of
service in faith to the local region.

Coming full
circle
His parents sacrificed it all to afford him and
his siblings a better life, now German Garcia is using his
education to pay the favor back a few times over.
Like so many others, they took
menial jobs and sacrificed it all so long as their children had
a roof over their head, food to eat, and clean clothes to wear
to school. Today, it is their eldest son who stands bright-eyed
and hopeful with many of the same dreams his parents once had.
Only now it is he who wants to give them a better life.

Applause and thank you to all volunteers
Each year through the support of
countless individual and corporate volunteers, the nonprofit
organization serves dozens of thousands of individuals
throughout the local region. On any given day they can be found
serving meals to seniors and the homeless, playing basketball or
football with at-risk youth, painting or rebuilding one of the
local Salvation Army facilities, spreading good cheer at a red
kettle donation site during the Christmas season, or even
sorting and packaging gifts at the Secret Santa Warehouse.

It’s not exactly Fashion Week, but it is for a
good cause
Organizers are
keeping mum about the specific designer lines set to hit the
runway at Reflections on Style, but if tickets sales are any
indication, odds are many of the same designers from New York’s
Fashion Week will have their collections make an appearance in
Houston. The main difference between New York’s Fashion Week and
Houston’s Reflections on Style Boutique and Runway Show is the
price.

Through The Salvation Army,
independent living is a reality for many seniors
Faced with the somber reality of
not having enough savings in their retirement funds, many local
seniors are finding their golden years aren’t so bright after
all. Those with family willing to take them in are forced into
less than desirable retirement situations, often having to share
their living quarters with that of their children’s growing and
busy families.
Some might say they are the lucky
ones.

Butterfly Effect: Sally's House
transitions women off Houston's streets
It’s a building that many people don’t notice. Nestled in the
outskirts of downtown Houston, opposite the 250 million dollar
Minute Maid Park (home to the Houston Astros), Sally’s House is
a humble two-story building with a familiar red shield as its
marker. For the homeless women in the fourth-largest city in the
United States, that red shield, with its simple message – "Doing
the Most Good"– is a beacon of hope.
