And Now Our Youth Of The Year Winners Present Their Award Winning Speeches
(March 12, 2013) – This past January Boys & Girls Club members of The Salvation Army received over $100,000 in scholarship awards from the very generous supporters of our annual Youth of the Year Scholarship Awards Contest. Among the recipients of these educational funds were Daphne Mata, a senior from the Northwest Corps Community Center, and Kandace Cortez, from our Irvington Corps Community Center. Daphne walked away with First Place and $30,000 in college scholarships. Kandace Cortez won second place in the overall citywide competition.
As part of the competition, Daphne and Kandace were required to submit an essay explaining how The Salvation Army has impacted their lives. These are their award winning speeches:
The Youth of the Year Program focuses on leadership, volunteerism, and a speech competition sponsored by The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Houston and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
This years awards banquet took place at the Hilton Americas Hotel and featured Spencer Tillman as the Keynote Speaker.
